What happens at an MDSi appointment?
Many people are a bit nervous before their first appointment because they don’t know what to expect. We try to make the whole thing as comfortable as possible. Don’t be afraid to ask questions about what we’re doing.
Here's what happens at an appointment:
1. You arrive and register.
A worker from your community will greet you when you arrive. If you come on time, you should not have to wait. A MDSi member will then take you to a private area where we will register you, ask you to sign a consent form, and ask you some questions.2. We put your information into our computer. This helps us keep track of your results during your appointment, and lets us see your previous results if you have seen us before. We will ask you to provide a urine sample if you can to test your kidneys.
3. We take you to our lab area.
Here, we will measure your height, weight, waist and blood pressure. We also poke your finger to collect a few drops of blood. We test your blood and urine in special machines that are like the ones in a clinic or hospital. Then we print out a report of your results.
4. You get your results.
We then take you to see our nurse or dietitian. The nurse or dietitian meets with you privately to explains your results and give you some advice. You get a copy of your results to take with you, and we can send copies to your doctor and community health nurse if you wish.
5. If you already know you have diabetes we can also check your eyes and feet for problems that you might not notice on your own.
When your book your appointment with us to get your blood checked, you can also book an eye test with us for the same day.
Eyes. To check your eyes, we will put some drops in your eyes that will make your vision blurry. This helps our camera get good pictures of your eyes. We will take about 7 pictures of your eyes. The eye test takes about an hour. A friend or family member should pick you up your eye test because your eyes might still be blurry from the drops.
Feet. We will also check your feet to see how sensitive they are, and to see if you have any cuts or callouses that need treatment.
If we find any problems with your eyes or feet, we will refer you to a specialist to get the right care.
