| Prevention of Obesity & Diabetes in Children & Families |
About BRAID and BRAID-Kids:
Data from the original BRAID study showed alarmingly high rates of obesity, overweight and pre-diabetes amongst children in Driftpile. The Community is home to about 170 children and adolescents ages 5-17, and BRAID has screened 102 (approximately 60%) of these children:

The Community - especially the elders, the leadership, and the health center staff - are very concerned about these results. They invited BRAID researchers to join with them to do a project on how diabetes might be preventable by working with families, and by taking into account the loss of self-esteem, pride, and sense of identity that has occurred as a result of colonization.
The BRAID-Kids project will try to find out if addressing these tradgedies will help empower families to live healthier lives and avoid the behaviours that can lead to obesity and diabetes.

BRAID-Kids aims to increase physical activity and improve dietary choices amongst children in Driftpile through a tradition-based “Cree Pride” educational program that incorporates traditional Cree beliefs and values surrounding health, well-being and appropriate lifestyle.
BRAID-Kids will build on the previous success of the Kahnawake Schools Diabetes Prevention Program (KSDPP), and the Sandy Lake diabetes prevention program. BRAID-Kids will incorporate an improved study design, which will include randomization and an enhanced interevention (Cree Pride). |
BRAID-Kids is funded by the Lawson Foundation, and organization dedicated to supporting sustainable community-based programs that enrich the lives of Canadian families. |
